In this video, Mike shows you how to play Where the Soul of Man Never Dies in the key of E on the mandolin. You can learn to play bluegrass chop chords, and to play solos which are based on those played by Ricky Skaggs. This is a great old traditional gospel tune that lends itself to harmony singing. Have fun.

This fiddle tune is in the key of A, but on the guitar, you will play using key of G chord shapes with a capo on the 2nd fret to raise it to A. Here's a great studio version with Byron Berline and Bill Monroe who wrote the tune in the late 1960s. It has become a bluegrass standard. ruclips.net/video/fqNqs068CP4/видео.htmlsi=h...

    • @BluegrassWithFriends
      @BluegrassWithFriends 22 дня назад

      There are a lot of sheet music versions for this song that should be easy to find, The Fiddlers Fake Book has one. But learning by LISTENING and WATCHING are VALUABLE skills that seem impossible at first but can be learned. Start with LOOPTUBE,learn how to use it, take the first few notes, loop them and LISTEN until you can sing them, find them on the fiddle, play them very slowly (10 or 20 times) until you have them right,then do the same with the next few notes.Then play them together 10or 20 times. slowly building your LISTENING and WATCHING skills as you learn the song. If you KEEP TRYING you can do it but you have to want it very badly!

    When I began playing the violin I wanted to jump right in to playing notes on the fingerboard. I soon got frustrated with the poor quality sounds that emanated far too often. Now I’m going back to bow fundamentals. Thanks for the video

    So it it wrong to play it without the capo? Like will it match the banjo part, or would the chords be different? In videos with glam Campbell he isn’t using a capo, but in the movie he does. so I’m just wondering

    Im confused on where the 8th notes are on the tab.

    • @BluegrassWithFriends
      @BluegrassWithFriends 3 месяца назад

      The first 4 notes at the left are eighth notes. Notice that they have a bar connecting between them. (They can also be shown with a "flag" on the tail but in groups they have a bar) Quarter notes have a straight tail.

    • @BluegrassWithFriends
      @BluegrassWithFriends 3 месяца назад

      If you are looking in my printed book, page 9 shows an example of quarter notes. The first measure on top has 4 quarter notes, counted 1, 2, 3, 4. Two eighth notes fit the time duration of one quarter note. They are counted as 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &.

    The scale is the same as D major, with two sharps, but it's wrong to say "the key is D" because the key is actually E Dorian.
